Paddling this hybrid canoe/kayak on a lake near the 50 Campfires basecamp, we loved the low center of gravity from the centered seat, combined with the open-top storage of the wide body. Unlike our kayaks, the NEXT canoe was easy to clean at the end of the day, with any water that got in easily emptying out, and when we took this boat out on the water for a fishing trip, it was easy to access our tackle, rods and cooler throughout the day. Of course, the greatest benefit of the open design, over a traditional kayak, is the amount of gear you can haul. Not that we’re saying to bring everything on your trip down the river, but it’s sure nice to have the option. We found the Old Town NEXT canoe to be an easy paddling, straight tracking craft, and just as it’s touted the perfect hybrid between a canoe and a kayak.
Everyone loves kayaks because they’re nimble and comfortable, but what if you have gear to haul? You’re very limited. You could of course, just put it all in a canoe, but if you’re alone it can become cumbersome to manage. If only a kayak and a canoe could hook up and create a canayak…or um, kayoe? Guess what, it’s already happened!
Old Town created the NEXT canoe, which combines the best features of each. It’s an open design that features the low profile of a kayak, while still allowing you to haul a significant amount of gear. The max load is 450 lbs. The 13’ NEXT canoe works great with both single and double-bladed paddles, and features a 3-layer hull with a subtle rocker for durability and smooth tracking. It’s 29” wide and 11.5” deep, and has one of the most comfortable seats we’ve seen. The foot braces really give the nimble feel of a kayak, and make for endless fun on the water.
