Cinnamon Hot Buttered Rum
Recipe type: Drinks
Serves: 8
Buttered rum is a classic winter warm-up cocktail. This version adds the comfort spices of cinnamon and sugar – almost like pouring a mug full of steaming cinnamon toast! Carry the drink and the compound butter to your destination separately and mix individual mugs there. You’ll be very glad you did.
  • 12 oz. dark rum
  • 6 cups hot water (just off the boil)
  • 8 cinnamon sticks
  • 8 Tbsp. cinnamon/sugar butter
  • ⅔ cup unsalted butter (at room temp, but not melted)
  • ⅓ cup dark brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. real maple syrup
  • ⅓ tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 2 pinches salt
  2. Place butter, brown sugar, maple syrup, cinnamon, and salt in mixing bowl.
  3. Beat with electric mixer or by hand until smooth, creamy, and all ingredients are fully incorporated.
  4. Store in a zipper top freezer-weight bag.
  6. Preheat thermos with boiling water.
  7. Mix the six cups of hot water for the drink with the rum. Pour into pre-heated thermos and seal immediately.
  8. When you’re ready to make the drinks, spoon one tablespoon of the compound butter into each mug. Fill the mug about ¾ full directly from thermos.
  9. Garnish each mug with a cinnamon stick that doubles as a swizzle.
