Fishing, tubing, and plenty of room for the kids to play. We had the chance to speak with Carol from Tchefuncte Campground, and she shared some insights on what makes this campground so special. Tchefuncte Campground Louisiana
Camp Louisiana: I’m talking with Carol this morning. She’s the Manager at Tchefuncte Campground in Louisiana. How’s it going today?
Carol: It’s great. Nice and sunny so far.
CL: Perfect. Let’s talk a little bit about how long Tchefuncte Campground has been there and how it got started.
Carol: I believe it started back in the ’70s. I used to actually bring my son out here before I started camping, just to come out for the day and he was four, and now he’s 44. So, it’s been a while. The current owners have just been here for about ten years.
CL: Okay. Now, we had a conversation earlier where I thought you nicely highlighted one of the differences between Tchefuncte Campground and some of the other attractions in the area. Maybe you could tell our listeners about that again.
Carol: What we do here is we have an old fashioned family-oriented campground. We’re also pet friendly. And so, when people come out here, usually they’re doing more of the old fashioned getaways. They come to make a fire, have s’mores, sit by the river, and maybe fish a little bit, or sit out there at night and look at the stars. There’s not a lot of phonetic activity here, although, on Saturdays, we do have a lady that we’ve brought in and she makes sure the kids have something to do and gives the parents a chance to relax. You know, maybe just some crafts through the day. They just blow up balloons and make faces and bounce them in the air, and everybody was really laughing. I was really surprised they had that much fun. But people, like I said, basically come out here more to get away.
CL: Yeah, I like that. You know, and it’s nice to have campgrounds where they’re kind of balancing out the different things that people want to do, because especially in RV parks, a lot of them that I’ve talked to, a lot of them really go heavy on the activity calendar because they have long-term campers and there’s some kind of crazy thing happening every single day. I personally am a little more drawn to what you guys are doing there though, which is just crack a beverage around a campfire in the night and just look at the stars.
Carol: Right. Right. Now, you can come up and play checkers or cards – some of the old fashioned activities -, but yeah, we’re pretty laid back around here.
CL: Nice. Two more questions for you. If you were going to spend just one hour on the property there of Tchefuncte Campground, how would you spend your time, Carol?
Carol: We have what we call a habitat area that goes along the river that’s past where the campsites are. I would probably spend an hour back there, just walking around it and sitting by the river, looking for animal tracks. We get the usual possums, raccoons, and so that’s kind of fun.
CL: Nice. Nice. And if you were going to spend just one night in Tchefuncte Campground, which specific site would you stay at and why?
Carol: We have one area where there’s like a small bluff that runs parallel to the river. There’s a little bluff there and there’s another grassy bluff, and then the river, and I like that. It looks out right over the river. It looks out over that area there, where it’s grassy, and you can look up and see the stars. I’m a big star watcher, so that would be my favorite, near the river.
CL: Nice. And before we go, tell our listeners a little bit about the types of camping that you offer there for your visitors.
Carol: We get a lot of tent campers, because they like that area that I was just speaking of. We get the standard tagalong trailer. A lot of those from people who are here in the State that are weekenders. And we get people traveling through in huge – I call them the – monster rigs, but that’s kind of unusual. We’re back off from the highway and some people don’t really want to drive. I think people have gotten used to be close to the Interstate. I find that funny just because my concept of camping is what we have. You know, the woods, the river, the stars.
