Gear of the Year Awards 2016: Recover

The Camping Authority Announces Annual Gear Award to Recover.

Our obsession with the convenience of plastic water bottles has turned into one of the biggest environmental problems we face today. The United States uses about 50 billion water bottles per year, and only about 23 percent of them get recycled. That’s a horrifying amount of plastic going into the environment. Recover decided to start chipping away at that number by making clothing from recycled plastic water bottles.

Recover salvages cotton from industry scraps and combines it with plastic to make clothing. Eight water bottles are used per one t-shirt, which is kind of amazing. Their production method also results in a 55% reduction in water consumption, and it provides sustainable jobs in developing countries. It’s an inspiring way to build a new clothing line, and worthy of Gear of the Year.
