Camping Homestead Campground in Sussex County

Camp Delaware had a chance to catch up with Michael Blackwelder at Homestead Campground in Sussex County to chat about the best activities, camping spots and things to do in the area.

Michael’s Favorite Thing To Do
Swim a few laps in the pool, play a video game or 2 in the game room, visit with our wonderful tenants/campers that choose to stay with us, walk our nicely landscaped grounds and finish up my one hour in the Homestead General Store with a cold bottle of water.

Michael’s Favorite Camping Spot
I would be happy any where in our campground depending on the circumstance

Camping at Homestead Campground

How long has Homestead campground been there and how did it start?
Homestead Campground has been around for over 40 years. It was started by Bill Prettyman a local farmer. He had a bumper crop of Soybeans one year and decided venture into a new business. His vision was too start a campground. He started with a few tent sites in the wooded section of the camp. Over the years that vision of a family campground has grown into a destination of many campers. After many years as a hands on every day owner and operator Mr. Bill (as all campers call him) decided to hand the reigns over to new ownership.

What are the most popular activities at the campground?
At the camp we do offer many activities, I would personally say the 2 pools we have here onsite are the most popular activity. We offer a family pool which is where all families and adults alike are able to swim, relax and play. We also have an “adult” pool which is for 21 years and older. What this means is that adults may relax and swim without any little guys splashing and jumping all around and on them. This works out very well for the campground as a whole.

Where is Homestead Campground located? What are some of the other attractions in the area worth checking out?
We are located in Sussex County Delaware in the Milton/Georgetown area of the County. We are approximately a 15 minute drive from Rehoboth Beach and Lewes Delaware. These are two wonderful beach towns located on the coast of Delaware. Lewes is a Victorian type town with many little street side shops and wonderful restaurants. There is also a fishing district where you can throw a line right there in the inlet, or jump on a charter boat of various designs. In Rehoboth Beach, Delaware you will find a 2 mile long Boardwalk with all the goodies that a boardwalk has to offer from funnel cakes and Salt Water Taffy, to afun games and miniature golf. You will also find pristine beaches that welcome visitors from around the world every year.

Homestead Family Campground is also 10 minutes from a large scale sports complex called Sports At the Beach. This facility plays host to many Little and Big League baseball games throughout the spring and summer months. We are very lucky in our location to be so close to so many more major sports and historic attractions.

What are the campsites like? Are they more open or secluded?
The lay out of our campground varies. We offer “pull through” RV sites which each site is approximately 80 feet deep by 30 feet wide. Each site has its own water, sewer and electric hook ups on the site. As for tent camping, we offer as we call it “rough camping” with wooded/shaded lots that also have water and electric hook ups on each site. As an added bonus starting this season, we here at Homestead Campground have added 2 cabins. These are located in the rear of our property for the most privacy that is available. Each of these cabins sleeps 4 and are equipped with a 1/2 bath and air conditioning/heat.

If you could spend one hour in the campground, what would you do?
Well I would swim a few laps in the pool, play a video game or 2 in the game room, visit with our wonderful tenants/campers that choose to stay with us, walk our nicely landscaped grounds and finish up my one hour in the Homestead General Store with a cold bottle of water.

If you could spend just one night in Homestead Campground, which campsite would you choose – and why?
Wow now that is a hard question. The term camping to me means good ‘ol fashion tent camping. So one of our tent sites would fit me just right. But as my age grows higher and higher as the years go by, one of our nice a/c equipped cabins fits me better these days. And may I add if I did own either a motor coach or a pull behind camper I would definitely choose one of our new pull through lots, where we can accommodate practically any size camper or coach. So to answer I would be happy any where in our campground depending on the circumstance.
