3 Tips To Get You Started Stargazing

Stargazing can add a whole other dimension to your outdoor experience. It provides a perspective and sense of wonder that is other worldly. If you’re looking to add another dimension to your camping weekend, the night sky will deliver. Here are three tips to help you get started.

The first thing you want to do is to familiarize yourself with the night sky without a telescope. Start by trying to understand the relationships between constellations simply by looking up. If you have a pair of binoculars, you’ll be surprised at how much they can add to the experience. If you don’t believe us, step outside tonight and just look at the moon with binoculars. It’s an entirely different experience. Free online star maps or apps on your phone can help you begin to identify constellations.

Your next step should be to get involved in a local stargazing club. You’ll learn a lot faster and will stick with it much longer if you immerse yourself in a community of people that know more than you. A great place to start is NASA’s Skynet network. I was able to find a club only 6 miles from my house in just a few seconds.

Last but not least, you’ll need to purchase a telescope when you’re ready to get serious. For beginners, a reflector style telescope is usually the best place to start. They’re the most economical and will provide a clear view of the night sky that will have you up and running in no time.
